Mark Lewandowski is a bassist living in London. A new face on the London jazz scene, he has been described as having a "huge vibrant, singing tone (producing) some amazing solos with the agility and articulation of a horn player" (Nottingham evening post) Originally hailing from Nottingham, Mark’s interest in the bass took him to London to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. During this period he was able to take lessons with bassists Steve Watts and Michael Janisch and also with one of his great influences, the great Henry Grimes. Whilst studying at the school Mark was rapidly producing a strong name for himself on the London scene; playing regularly at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club by only his second year in the capital. Mark graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama with a first class honors degree. He was also awarded the Yamaha Jazz Scholarship award in this same year.
He has had the opportunity to perform with some of the most exciting improvisers in the british jazz scene including Liam Noble, Zoe Rahman Trio, Jean Toussaint, Julian Joseph, Tina May, Soweto Kinch, Peter King, John Surman, Zhenya Strigalev, Jay Phelps Quartet and Buddy Greco amongst others. Through establishing himself as a strong and inventive sideman, mark has become busy working in a range of musical settings including straight ahead, original music and improvised music; working with a myriad of musicians both up-and-coming and established.
Recent projects of his own have included:
- A Quartet performing the music of ‘Old and New Dreams’ featuring Tom Challenger, Byron Wallen and Tim Giles.
- A trio with free saxophonist Josh Ison
- A new piano trio playing original compositions incorporating elements of freedom featuring Jamie Safiruddin (Piano, Organ, Electronics) and Will Glaser (Drums)
